I was born and raised in a small rural town in North Carolina. I received a bachelor's degree in elementary education at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, and a master's degree in Language and Literacy at Salem College in Winston Salem, NC. I taught for 30 years at Sandy Ridge Elementary School in Sandy Ridge, North Carolina, spending time in kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade classrooms, with most of my time in kindergarten. After retiring from the NC school system, I moved to the UAE, where I taught kindergarten for five years in Abu Dhabi.
Throughout my teaching career, I have seen the education of our children change dramatically. Unfortunately, I cannot say it has been for the best. Through no fault of their own, schools have their focus on test scores, not what is best for the individual student. Teachers are pushed to cover the material, even if it means moving ahead before students understand and grasp the concept. Kindergarten has become what first and sometimes even second-grade use to be.
Many parents are turning to homeschool. Homeschooling allows parents to choose how their children are taught and explore different educational approaches that best meet their child's individual needs. It allows them to instill their values, beliefs, and morals and discover unique ways to help their child become successful. Seeing the need to support parents as they teach their own children, Kindercaravan was developed. We offer a place for a small group of kindergarten children to build their foundational skills through developmentally appropriate means and to build a love of learning. Using a thematic approach, usually built around a book, we will learn our letters, sounds, words, how to read, numbers, counting, science concepts, and more! Imagine your child learning by using playdough, paint, dramatic play areas, blocks, natural materials, etc., at a pace that is right for them. There will be no workbooks or worksheets. Your child will find fun and joy in learning. What better way to build the foundation for success!
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family, renovating and decorating my home, and traveling. I have had the opportunity to visit 18 countries (5 continents), 10 of them while living in the UAE.
